Greenstone reverses the trend of Australian winemakers going to Europe to make wine - the winemaker at Greenstone is Alberto Antonini from Tuscany, a heartland of Italian wine. His international perspective has made Greenstone's wines some of the more interesting to come from Heathcote. Rating: 5 Stars (A superb example, a near perfect wine of great character, worthy of the big occasion and the best company). Value: $$$ A wine with a price tag that makes it a steal.

Mick Cann is one of Heathcote's top winemakers but doesn't get a lot of publicity due to the fact that he makes minuscule quantities. 2008 was no exception with yields restricted to an extremely low 1 tonne per acre due to the on-going drought resulting in very, resulting in very concentrated, high quality fruit. Maturation took place in a combination of French, Russian and American oak hogsheads.

Thanks to Galli. bargain Heathcote Shiraz is no longer a paradox.Layered with pepper and spice, ripe plum and cherry fruit and soft, fine tannins, it's ready to rip into right away. Give it a light chill to lift its peppery spice and tone down its 14.9% alcohol. 91 points.

Predominantly Sangiovese with a splash of Nebbiolo and Cabernet, this Heathcote rosé has found a happy balance between texture, flavour and gentle sweetness, enhancing fruit character. Musky red fruit perfume and brambly berry flavour linger nicely. 93 points.

"Best use of an Aussie classic grape variety" This is the classic Aussie red grape from a new classic region (Heathcote) as you have never seen it before. The Greenstone Vineyard '06 Shiraz ($35)has an Italian maker and an Aussie grower and is shy and retiring. Prepare to be gobsmacked.

Munari Schoolhouse Red 2005 Shiraz Viognier, $30. 2005 is an eon ago but worth the wait, this is almost as good as the Swans winning the flag, indeed given the Swans are unlikely to repeat that soon, this is a much better prospect. Fabulous wine. 9.2/10.

96/100 James Halliday Rating 96/100 and “Deep crimson-purple, the bouquet promises opulent black fruits with a dash of oak and spice, and so it is, but on a quality level above expectations, incredibly rich and supple, but not jammy, generous oak and ripe tannins finish the taste. The cork is of high quality, as it should be. 14.8% alc. To 2031.” Australian Wine Companion 2010
