Halliday's 5 Emblematic Australian Wines - Flynns Heathcote Sangiovese 2006

This wine has interesting aromas of spice and leather alongside more traditional sour cherry/red cherry; the fruit flavours have similar nuances, the tannins nicely balanced and integrated. Australian Sangiovese doesn't come much better than this. Screwcap. 13.7% Rating: 94 Drink: 2015 Price: $30

The so called alternative varieties bcome more numerous every year, if not quite every day. There are more white grapes in the overall category, but none to (yet) seriously challenge Sangiovese and Tempranillo. Of these two, Sangiovese is the hardest to please, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest Heathcote and the King Valley hold most promise.

The other four wines featured in this article were; Leeuwin Estate Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay 2006 $96, Bay of Fires Arras Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2002 $70, Tuck's Ridge Buckle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007 $80, Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon 2005 $59.
