Heathcote Estate has taken out the major Heathcote Grand Terroir trophy at this year’s Saint Martin Heathcote Wine Show.
The award was presented at Saturday’s Showcase of the Region dinner attended attended by more than 150 people who enjoyed a menu prepared by Frank Camorra of top Melbourne restaurant MoVida and Trufflepig Catering, matched with trophy and gold medal winning wines from the show.
Luke Lomax, who had also been chief steward for the show, accepted the HGT from winegrowers’ association president Gary Harbor.
The HGT is judged for quality and consistency over three vintages - Heathcote Estate entering its 2012, 2014 and 2017 Single Vineyard Shiraz.
Chairman of judges Sue Bell has been part of the Heathcote Wine Show since its inception six years and ago said the region had shown remarkable growth in its wines over that time.
Sanguine Estate will represent the Heathcote region in the Victorian Wine Awards later this year with its 2017 Progeny Shiraz that collected trophies four trophies at the show – best wine made and grown in Heathcote, best single vineyard, best shiraz and best young shiraz.
In the shiraz classes, the flagship variety of the region, judges said the eight gold medal wines showed a wonderful array of styles highlighting the diversity of the region’s microclimates with 2017 vintages displaying good viticulture and winemaking.
And when it came to Mediterranean classes, enthusiasm of judges rose again. “Bling, bling, bling – what a great class to judge. Heathcote’s second gold rush – serious excitement and diversity here,” they said.
The show attracted record entries from across Australia as it continues to become one of the nation’s leading regional shows.
A total of 155 medals, including 27 gold, were awarded over two days of judging.
